LAUREL & HARDY DVD VOL. 6: Murder in the Air - Classic shorts
The Laurel - Hardy Murder Case - 1930- Very nice version with original titles, clear sound and picture. There is also an alternative colourised version of this film.
Noche De Duendes - 1930 (Spanish version of The Laurel - Hardy Murder Case and Berth Marks

A rare chance to hear the boys speak Spanish and even better is the inclusion of longer and sometimes additional scenes not in the English versions. These versions were discovered several years ago in the MGM vaults. Interestingly enough Berth Marks was only filmed in English, however here we have reused footage from the English version of Berth Marks (where no dialogue is spoken). The footage with Spanish dialogue from what resembles Berth Marks was I believe refilmed a year later at the same time as The Laurel - Hardy Murder Case.

Berth Marks - 1929- An immediate disappointment with unnecessarily remade main and end titles and gag title. The rest originates from the late 1930's reissue version with added 'cookoo' music recorded in 1932. Picture quality isn't the best and the sound is quite rough. I would have preferred to have seen decomposing main titles than the remade titles, a curious waste of time and expense. There is also an alternative colourised version of this film which bizarrely enough has the original silent introductory titles!

The talkie version the titles state:

"Mr. Hardy told Mr. Laurel to meet him at the Santa Fe Station at a quarter of ten - but Mr. Laurel became confused and thought he meant 9:45".

However, the titles on the colourised version (which was prepared from the negative of the silent version) state:

"Mr. Hardy told Mr. Laurel to meet him at the Southern Pacific Station Wednesday morning - So Mr. Laurel went to the Santa Fe on Thursday afternoon - "

It is well documented that both sound and silent versions of this film were made. There is also an alternative colourised version of this film.

Oliver The Eight - 1934- This film has all original titles with good clean sound and picture. There is also an alternative colourised version of this film.
